Mark & Emma's L.A. Wedding

HERE are a few pictures from a recent wedding I photographed in Long Ashton, Bristol. This wedding threw up a number of challenges - namely that the vicar told me I was not allowed to take any photographs during the ceremony, and that I could either take four photos from the back of the church with a long lens, or go upstairs and shoot from behind a window. Neither of these options appealed to me - my clients had hired my to capture their vows and I didn't want to disappoint. When I asked the vicar why she was reluctant to let me work during the service, she said others that had photographed the ceremony were noisy and distracting.

With that in mind, I decided to switch from my Canon DSLR cameras over to a couple of Fuji X-Series mirrorless cameras - an X-E2 and X-100s to be precise. I shot a couple of frames from the back of the church and upstairs as requested before sneaking down with my little Fuji's and shoot silently. Nobody noticed me and everyone was happy.

Obviously every wedding has something unique about it, but the lay-out and decor at the reception venue - The Tithe Barn in Nailsea near Bristol - was quite something, and all the work was down to the lovely couple Emma and Mark. Another unique aspect of the day was the Best Man's speech. That job was handed to Mark's brother, Andrew. I won't go into details about the content of his speech, but I will say a lot of Mark's sporting idols played a part in helping to make this a truly special day.

I thought I'd start my new blog by showing you some images captured with my little Fuji X-E2 camera fitted with the razor-sharp 35mm f2.0 lens. For my day job as an action sports photographer, I use a couple of Canon 1DX's, and although this kit is fantastic - its big, bulky, extremely visible and heavy!

I stumbled across the Fuji system about 18-months ago, and I love everything about it. The size and weight of the kit is a factor, but for me, it's all about the image quality that comes from these little cameras. All of the images were captured hand-held while strolling around the docks in my home town (I love Bristol, mind). I set the film simulation to B&W/R, adjusted the contrast settings in-camera for punchy, deep blacks, and fired off a few frames... What a hero... The smiles say it all. Off come the bails... Auguy Slowik. So the boys from Bristol Rugby, led by Adrian Jarvis, made the short trip from their training base at Clifton Rugby Club to take on Bishopston Cricket Club. As expected, the home side came through in the end, but the highlight of the evening was a brilliant catch on the boundary by Knowle West boy Ellis Genge. Here are a few pictures...
